18 April 2024

The Faculty of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Mount Athos Center are jointly organising a screening of Panos Karkanevatos’ documentary ‘Sacred Art’ on Thursday 18 April at 18:30 in Amphitheatre D on the 1st floor of the Faculty of Theology.

The documentary film ‘Sacred Art’ traces the development of Byzantine icon-painting from within. Contemporary painter-iconographers and Byzantine art theorists attempt to interpret some of the emblematic moments of Byzantine iconography: its beginnings, the exquisite works of the Comnenian and Palaiologan periods; the masterpieces of ‘Panselinos’ in the Protaton on Mount Athos; the Cretan School and the works by Theophanes the Cretan at the Anapausas Monastery in the Meteora and Stavroniketa Monastery on Mount Athos; the emblematic work of Dionysios of Fourna and the composition of his book Interpretation of the Art of Painting; the Nazarene Period, the ‘folk’ version of art and the revolutionary change in icon-painting brought about by Fotis Kontoglou. It is a magnificent journey through the inexhaustible wealth and treasures of Byzantine iconography.

The following painter-iconographers take part in the documentary (in alphabetical order): Demosthenes K. Avramidis; (†) Hieromonk Anastasios from the Cell of Dionysios of Fourna; Vasiliki Th. Argyropoulou; Markos Kampanis; Giorgos Kordis; Hieromonk Loukas Xenophontinos; Father Stamatis Skliris; Demetris Hatziapostolou, and Nikos Hondrogiannis.
