This commemorative conference on the theme ‘St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite and his era: 200 years since his repose’ belongs to the group of conferences that have examined various periods in the history of the Holy Mountain. Devoted to the life, work and theology of St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite, one of the most important figures in the recent history of the Church, and perhaps the most prolific Athonite writer, who played a decisive role in the Philokalic Renaissance and the promotion of the neptic tradition. Some of the papers presented at the conference examined and evaluated the work of St. Nikodemos within the historical context of his time.

The conference was jointly organised by the Mount Athos Center and the Faculty of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in November 2009, under the aegis of the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All-Holiness Bartholomew.
At the opening ceremony on Friday 6 November, in the Church of St. George / Rotunda, addresses were given by the President of the Board of Directors of the Mount Athos Center, the Mayor of Thessaloniki Mr Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, the President of the Department of Pastoral and Social Theology of the Theology Faculty at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr Christos Oikonomou, the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, the Most Reverend Anthimos, and representatives of both the Holy Community of Mount Athos and His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Two Byzantine choirs – the Byzantine Choir of the Faculty of Theology and a choir of Athonite monks – graced the occasion with Byzantine hymns.
The proceedings of the first day of the conference were brought to a conclusion with papers presented by Antonios-Emilios Tachiaos (‘Enlightenment and conservatism: the spiritual tendencies in Greece in the 18th century’) and Kriton Chryssochoidis (‘The Athonite reality in the time of St. Nikodemos’).
