The conference on the theme ‘Mount Athos in the period before, during and after the Liberation’, which was organised in November 2012 to mark the centenary of the liberation of Mount Athos from Ottoman rule, presented an opportunity for researchers to explore not only the historical event of the liberation of the Athonite peninsula, but also the history of Athos during the last few decades of the 19th century and the period up to about 1920, roughly ten years after the incorporation of Athos into the Greek state.

The conference dealt with themes concerning Athos in the context of the general upheavals in the Balkans (last few decades of the 19th century), the historical event of the liberation, the internal and external (political and diplomatic) processes that led to the determination of Athos’s status, the community’s relations with the state bodies of the time, its institutional organisation, spiritual life, built environment and functions, as well as the art that developed on Athos during this period.
The conference included two round tables on themes related to its central subject: one in honour of Gabriel Millet, the French pioneer of research on Athos in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the other on Nazarene painting, the dominant artistic current on Athos in the late 19th century and first few decades of the 20th century.
