A group exhibition of photographs and sacred treasures

The Mount Athos Center is contributing to the programme of events for the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s ‘Devotional Week’ by organising a group exhibition of photographs and sacred treasures entitled ‘Easter on Mount Athos’, which presents photographic material on the subject of Holy Week and Easter in the Athonite republic.

The photographs come from the photographic archive of the Mount Athos Center and are the product of collaborations with accomplished photographers of international repute who have visited Mount Athos and captured images of the liturgical life and daily activities of the Athonite fathers. This particular exhibition, however, focuses on the services and rites of Holy Week and the Resurrection and the litanies of sacred icons from the monasteries, the most important of these being those of the ‘Axion Esti’ icon on Bright Monday and the Virgin Portaitissa of Iviron Monastery on Bright Tuesday.

The photographers with work featuring in the exhibition are as follows: Monk Gavriil Philotheitis (Mount Athos) • † Giorgos Poupis • Giorgos Fousteris • Dimitris Karakatsanis • Tomasz Mościcki (Poland) • Ali Borovali  (Turkey) • Zbigniew Kosc (Holland) • † Zoran Purger (Serbia) • Valery Bliznyuk (Russia)

The exhibition is accompanied by icons and treasures depicting scenes from the sacred days of Holy Week and the Resurrection from the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki and the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Panagouda), and is being staged with the invaluable cooperation of His Excellency Philotheos, Metropolitan of Thessaloniki.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition, the documentary entitled ‘Easter on Mount Athos’, directed by Angelos Papastephanos (Mount Athos Film Archive, 2006), will be shown.

The exhibition will be opened on Monday 22 April at 8 p.m. by His Excellency Philotheos, Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki and President of the Mount Athos Center’s Board of Directors Mr. Stelios Angeloudis. During the opening ceremony chants will be sung by students specialising in the ‘Interpretation and Performance of the Psaltic Art’ at the Department of Musical Science and Art of the University of Macedonia, under the artistic supervison of Giorgos Patronas, assistant professor at the University of Macedonia.
