February 28 - May 7, 2022

(extension until May 28, 2022)

It is our great pleasure to announce the opening of the exhibition of photographs by George Poupis entitled ‘Exaltation: the Cross in the Land of Mount Athos’.
The photographic material that is presented in the exhibition forms part of the archive of the late lamented photographer George Poupis, who, from his own individual perspective and with his own highly personal aesthetic, has captured on film some of the outdoor crosses that exist in the Athonite Republic. This photographic material was lovingly and patiently gathered by George Poupis during the course of the numerous visits that he made to Mount Athos over a period of thirty years.

Alongside the exhibition, a bilingual exhibition catalogue in Greek and English has been issued which contains not only all the photographs displayed in the exhibition but also additional material that places the photographer’s work on this subject in context. The main text in the catalogue and the exhibition was written by Archimandrite Basil Gontikakis, Prohegoumenos of Iveron Monastery, and is entitled ‘The Cross (and the crosses) on Mount Athos’. The catalogue also includes a text by the photographer himself. The exhibition catalogue is available for purchase at the bookstore of the Mount Athos Center and can also be purchased from our new online store at https://bit.ly/35xICxT.

The Mount Athos Center began preparing the exhibition and associated catalogue with George Poupis himself in 2017 but unfortunately the photographer’s early ‘repose’ prevented him from attending the presentation of his work by the Center, which he had been so eagerly looking forward to. While the exhibition was being prepared, the photographer expressed his wish that his archive of photographs of Athos should be placed at the disposal of the Mount Athos Center, a wish that was eventually fulfilled by his sister Panagiota Poupi. The archive now belongs to the Mount Athos Center and, once it has been documented and digitised, will be placed at the disposal of the general public.
