Friday 27 – Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 November 2020
The Mount Athos Centre is pleased to announce that preparations have begun for the organisation of its Fifth International Scientific Workshop. As is well known, this institution was initiated in 2016 and since then has been organised on an annual basis, having become established as a leading international forum for the exchange of information about scientific research on Mount Athos.
The main aim of the International Scientific Workshops is to develop a fruitful scientific dialogue that will enrich our knowledge of Athonite monasticism and broaden the scope of research on Mount Athos. The International Workshops, through the presentation of individual or group papers, provides members of the scientific community with an opportunity to publicise their latest research findings or to announce the initial results of ongoing research projects or scientific programmes, thereby helping to improve the final outcomes.
It is self-evident that the papers presented at the Workshop will deal directly with different aspects of Mount Athos (e.g. history, art, theology, law, institutions, literature, archaeology, art history, architecture, the natural environment, other visual arts and the conservation of art works).
The Fifth International Scientific Workshop will be held on Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2020 at the ‘Stephanos Dragoumis’ Auditorium of the Byzantine Museum of Culture in Thessaloniki.
During the course of the Workshop a total of 20 papers will be presented, each lasting 20 minutes. Each paper will be immediately followed by a 10-minute period for discussion.
All researchers wishing to present a paper at the forthcoming Workshop should download and complete the Entry Form, which should, without fail, be accompanied by a summary (300-600 words) of the subject-matter of the proposed paper.
In its selection of papers, the Scientific Committee will not consider entry forms that are not accompanied by a summary.
The final date for submission of entry forms is 31 July 2020.
The main criteria that will be used in the selection of papers for the final programme of the Workshop are as follows: thematic representativeness; the scope of the proposed topic; the use and presentation of original material, and the presentation of new research programmes. Special consideration will be given to individual or group proposals by young researchers.
For the purpose of organising and conducting the Fifth International Scientific Workshop, the governing board of the Mount Athos Centre has, by means of a relevant decision, appointed a Scientific Organising Committee, with the following composition:
